Fringe Episode 102 - NYTVF Review

Our good friend Amy from FilmingInBrooklyn.com was at the New York TV Festival screening of Fringe. Since the screening was scheduled after the season premiere, they showed Fringe Episode 2 - The Same Old Story.

Amy also happened to be in Brooklyn while they were filming this very episode.

Here is Amy's report from the screening:
I had the opportunity at the New York Television Festival to see an advance screening of episode 2 of "Fringe", which will air Tuesday at 9pm (right after the season premiere of "House"). Being fairly new to this, I'm not sure how much I'm supposed to reveal of an episode that hasn't aired yet. I know that if it were me reading this, I wouldn't want too much given away, or it wouldn't be as much fun to watch the episode. And this second episode was a lot of fun. The cow gets milked. And no, that's not a euphemism.

It opens in a motel room with a creepy-cute man preparing to do something bad to a woman, who is oblivious that she's in any danger. But then, before he gets a chance, she screams out in pain. There's something wrong with her stomach, which seems to be pulsing and getting bigger before our eyes. He seems to know immediately that something is horribly wrong and gets her out of there quickly. He rushes her to the hospital, by which time she looks to be about nine months pregnant, helps her out of the car, and then basically dumps her on the sidewalk and drives off, with her screaming in agony. When the doctors and nurses come to her aid, the mysterious screaming pregnant woman tries to tell them that she's not pregnant, but they prep her for an emergency C-section. Before they get the chance to do much of anything, there's a horrible crunching sound, and the woman's heart stops. They cut her open to get the baby out, and while we can't see the baby, the doctor is screaming in horror. I was expecting maybe the evil twin alien baby from V, but we don't get even a quick glance. Cue opening credits.

There's a scene between Phillip Broyles and Nina Sharp, discussing his hiring of Olivia for his team. Cut to a scene of Olivia looking pretty (but tired) as she sifts through secret files, trying to figure out the mystery of what the hell her (almost) dead boyfriend John Scott was up to before he (possibly) died. Olivia is alerted to the mystery at the hospital, and she wakes up The Bishops, one of whom is sleeping in the closet (guess which one). They get over to the hospital where they discover that a "baby" had been born, grew into an adult, and then died of old age, all within the space of about half an hour. Dr. Bishop wants to help figure out what happened, but he says he needs a lab. But Dr. Bish- Oh, nevermind, just get in the car, old man.

A tip leads Olivia and Peter to the motel room, where Olivia discovers that this mystery has something to do with an unsolved serial killer case that she and John had worked on. (This is one of those coincidences where you have to assume that it's not just a ridiculous coincidence, that it's all part of a grand plan, or else you just won't be able to believe in the rest of the series.) From there the investigation travels to a former colleague of Dr. Bishop's, who had been working on a secret government plan to grow test tube soldiers, but he swears that he hasn't worked on it in decades, that it was an evil idea that didn't work anyway.

Another dead woman leads to a great scene involving the eyeball that Jasika mentioned in her interview with Filming In Brooklyn. (Hint: it has to do with Jules Verne.) Then there's some stuff about the man-baby, and yes I'm getting more and more vague as this goes on because it will be much better if you watch it for yourself. The penultimate scene is a very sweet one between Bishop the Elder and Bishop the Younger, but the last scene will definitely creep you out.

Here are some screen shots from the Fringe music video "A Forest", by Ror-Shak.

You'll recognize some of the ubiquitous glyphs - the apple, leaf, hand, and butterfly. There is also a scene featuring the Sheep Video from the Fringe ARG - CASE 0091. Will CASE 0091 be a part of the show, or was all this shot just for the video?

There is also something interesting about the x-ray behind Dr. Bishop. Is that supposed to be a pregnant woman? The Fringe preview comic has a story that shows a woman giving birth, and Fringe episode 2 has a pregnancy related story line.

Here is the plot summary for Fringe Episode 2, titled "The Same Old Story"
Our unlikely trio’s strange partnership begins as they investigate the mysterious death of a woman who conceives, carries to full-term and births a baby in the span of hours, and her baby who ages 80 years in a matter of minutes.

As the bizarre and seemingly unexplainable occurrences are explored, quirky Dr. Bishop runs extensive testing in the lab; his reluctant son Peter endures his new role as his father’s keeper; and Olivia turns to Massive Dynamic Chief Operating Officer Nina Sharp for assistance.
