J.J. Abrams & Fringe Cast Talk Season 2

      Email Post       4/28/2009 12:12:00 PM

SCI FI Wire recently spoke with Fringe creator J.J. Abrams and some of the cast about Season 2. Highlights below:

Abrams:
"I'm really happy with so much of what we did this year. And I feel like we have barely gotten going. There's so much that we know we want to explore and knew we did from the beginning. A lot of it is yet to come."
"I think that season two should be pretty great, pretty dynamic...we have some cool ideas. I'm very excited about that. I'm proud of the group. My only regret is I wish we could have stayed shooting in New York. We had a terrific crew. That's the one thing I'd wish we'd be able to do differently. It's a show that's still, as it's going, evolving. Finding the balance between relatable characters and absolute science fiction takes a while, but I think we're getting there."

John Noble on Bell and Bishop:
"It's critical that they get together. I can't wait. Nothing this season, but I imagine there will be some fantastic scenes between Bell and Bishop. Bishop's never been in the room with his intellectual equal so far. Suddenly there's Bell, who's as smart as him. That's going to be fascinating. The writers will have a ball with that."

Joshua Jackson on the standalone Season 2 ep already in the can:
"They only had 22 airdates for our show this year, but they ordered 23 episodes, so we shot one for next year, which is just silly TV network stuff. It's not for any cool reason like we had something we needed in New York that we couldn't shoot elsewhere. It's just an accounting issue."

Jeff Pinkner on Nina Sharp:
"Blair Brown is very much a part of the show...the story we're telling thus far hasn't gone through her character every week, but she's sort of around on the perimeter. We're going to find out that she has a lot more knowledge of the condition of the show than we've revealed thus far, and she's a big part of our plans going forward."

Leonard Nimoy Talks Fringe

      Email Post       4/27/2009 01:03:00 PM

Leonard Nimoy recently spoke with SCI FI Wire about playing William Bell in the season finale of Fringe, There's More Than One of Everything. Here are some of the highlights:

On the finale:

Nimoy: It's one scene. It's the final scene of the episode, in which I appear with Olivia, with Anna Torv's character. It's very brief, but I think interesting, entertaining and there's enough given in the scene to whet your appetite, that you'll want to see more of this relationship and what it's all about. You'll want to know what it is he has in mind with Olivia, what he wants or needs her for, why he wants to see her, what their past history is about and where they're going together. What are they planning to do? What are his intentions? All of that is yet to come, and I think there's going to be some very interesting storytelling.

On Walter Bishop:

Nimoy: I'm sure we will learn more about that partnership and what it was all about, what they were trying to accomplish and how they happened to go their separate ways. We know a lot about what happened to Walter, but we don't know very much about William Bell at all. That's yet to be discovered.

On his episodes next season:

Nimoy: I don't know that they'll be chronological, sequential. I really don't know. It will really depend on what the writers have in mind and my availability. And then, if there's more to be done and we're having a good time, we'll do more.

Nimoy also spoke about his rumored role in the Transformers sequel, so head over to SCI FI Wire for the full interview.

Fringe Stars Spill Secrets At PaleyFest

      Email Post       4/25/2009 11:32:00 PM

Sci Fi Wire has a juicy article with quotes from Anna Torv, Jeff Pinkner, John Noble, Roberto Orci, Blair Brown, and Josh Jackson on the last three episodes of season one. Here are some highlights:

On Olivia's apparent pyrokinesis:
"I think it's more than that," Torv said. "I think for Olivia it's more than that, and I say that only because there's an episode coming up where we meet another subject, and I think it's more than that. I think what they got given or what they got taught is much bigger than just starting fire."

Pinkner's take:
"We saw the consequence," Pinkner said. "We saw that she started a fire at the end of the last episode, but I think it's a mistake to assume that that's her power. I think the truth is, it's probably a consequence of her ability."
On why Peter wasn't administered Cortexiphan:
"There's a piece of information that gets revealed about Peter at the end that tells you why I think that," Jackson said in a separate interview. "It's the last thing that you learn. It's not something that Peter does. It's something that happens around him, and he's not even aware of, but the audience becomes aware of, and it sort of radically changes how you think about this guy."
Pinkner's take:
" 'Is he Peter?' is a good question," Pinkner said. "'Is there only one Peter?' I think it's really exciting. We knew the secret of Peter before the season started, and it's been hinted at or sort of laid in in the architecture of the show since the pilot. We start to acknowledge to the audience what that secret is. He, Peter himself, will not learn the secret or one of the secrets at the end of this season, but we will."

Fringe Spoilers: Kirk Acevedo Unleashed

      Email Post       4/14/2009 01:43:00 PM

Sci Fi Wire spoke with Kirk Acevedo who reveals some huge spoilers about tonight's Fringe episode "Unleashed", and the plans for the show's future.

On Unleashed:
Q: Now Charlie's a trained agent. How does he let this griffin take him down?

Acevedo: It's a monster. I don't care how well trained you are, it's the world of Fringe, so there are bigger and badder things than yourselves.

Q: What does this griffin look like?

Acevedo: Do you know the mythological creature the griffin? The tail of it is like a snake. He's got the head of an eagle, the body of a lion, the wings of a dragon. That's what it sort of is. I haven't actually seen it, because I haven't seen the final special effect of it. It's CGI. We just had to use the imagination.

Q: How did you do the attack scene without a creature to work with?

Acevedo: I sort of just get attacked from behind, and the monster sort of impregnates me. Sort of like Aliens.

Q: Are you playing the deathbed for the episode?

Acevedo: Yeah, I'm pretty much fighting for my life for an hour. Just conversations with the wife and saying "I love you" and everything like that, and a lot of pain. Just trying to be Charlie and control the emotions and not let them overwhelm.

Q: How does Walter help find a cure for griffin impregnation?

Acevedo: Because Walter sort of created this monster. He sort of realizes it. This was part of Walter's research.
On the rest of the season
Q: When do you wrap for the season?

Acevedo: We finish up in about six days. We just finished the finale. We're actually working on a stand-alone episode for season two.

Q: When do you come back for next season?

Acevedo: You know, I was told we come back on June 24th, is supposed to be our start date.

Q: What could you tease about the finale and next season?

Acevedo: Well, I'm sure you heard about who might be playing William Bell. Leonard Nimoy, so we pretty much meet William Bell in the finale, which is really cool. Just, you learn a lot more about Massive Dynamic and what's going on with the whole mythology of the show, so it's pretty much more cemented in the final two episodes. Then the stand-alone episode is pretty much a stand-alone episode. It doesn't delve into the mythology of the show or anything.

Q: Did you get to work with Nimoy?

Acevedo: No, it's just Olivia meets him. I've got to be honest with you, I never thought of Leonard Nimoy to play William Bell, [but] of all the people I thought of down the line, I think he's actually perfect. People remember him as Spock on Star Trek, but he did tons of other stuff, [like] the Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake. I think he has the age, the depth, and that beautiful voice of his would be a perfect foil for John Noble.

Q: What sort of case is the stand-alone episode?

Acevedo: There's a little bit of Ghost Whisperer in that episode. That's all I'll say.

UPDATE: The LA Times also interviewed Kirk.

Our exclusive inside source at FOX/WB/Massive Dynamic has confirmed that the venerable Leonard Nimoy, best known for his portrayal as Spock in the original Star Trek franchise, will join the cast of Fringe as William Bell, founder of Massive Dynamic and Walter's original lab partner at Harvard.

According to several Fringe writers and producers, we'll meet Bell in this season's finale, There's More Than One of Everything, which airs May 12th.

This may mark Nimoy's third collaboration with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman this year, since he'll also appear in May's Star Trek (reprising his role as Spock), and possibly as the voice of the villain in this summer's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
