On the set of 'Fringe':Lincoln Lee lives!

      Email Post       9/23/2010 09:37:00 AM

Lincoln Lee fried into a crispy critter when we last saw him in the Season 2 finale of "Fringe."

But the lead investigator of the Fringe Division in the alternate universe survived. "We have special technology on our side that is able to heal burns," Seth Gabel, who plays Lincoln, said in explaining the nanite robots that work their magic on Lincoln.

Gabel agreed to an impromptu video interview during my visit to the show's Vancouver set earlier this month. "Fringe" returns for Season 3 at 8 p.m. Sept. 23 on Fox.

Gabel promised intense conspiracies in the alt universe (both, actually) that could even be hoodwinking Lincoln. He also revealed that Kirk Acevedo doesn't have to stretch much to play Scarlie, the goofier alt version of Charlie Francis.

"That's just Kirk," he said. "Kirk screws around, plays himself."

Watch our short video chat above. Just in case Gabel stumps anyone, here's the definition of perspicacious: [pur-spi-key-shuhs] having keen mental perception and understanding; discerning: to exhibit perspicacious judgment.

Exclusive:'Fringe' Extends Andre Royo's Stay

In any universe, this is great news: Fringe is bringing Bubbles Andre Royo back for seconds!
The Wire actor—who makes a sensational first impression in this Thursday’s absolutely thrilling season 3 premiere—will return for a second episode later this fall, sources confirm to me exclusively.

In case you missed my previous two stories on this subject, Royo plays an “over there” cabdriver who original-flavor Olivia encounters as she fights to find her way home. Some of my favorite moments in the episode sprang from their interplay, so I’m not surprised producers are bringing him back.

Playing With Parallel Universes
The new season of 'Fringe' focuses on the science of choice.
Sep 21, 2010

Inside Science News Service

There are moments in everyone’s life where a decision is made that affects everything that comes after it. Making a different choice long ago may have changed your life as well as your personality forever.

This is one of the themes that will play out for each character in season three of Fox’s hit television show "Fringe." At the end of the last season, two parallel universes collided. In season three, the cast will be using science fact and fiction to untangle them.

"Well, one area where we are letting the cat out of the bag is that season three will be very different than the first two," said Robert Chiappetta, one of the story editors for "Fringe." "In season one, science was neutral. Some of the characters used it for good and some for evil, viewers saw both sides. In season three, we are going deeper to understand why things have turned out the way they did."

Connecting physics to psychology, this season plays with the fringe science of parallel universes, where there are other universes related to ours that may have come from ours, but have different outcomes; chaos theory, where a small change in the beginning can cause a large impact at the end; and the psychological theory of nature versus nurture where your personality is shaped at birth, from your experience or a little of both.

"There are very crucial differences that trace back to key choices the characters have made," said Glen Whitman, another story editor for "Fringe." "What I love about this is that it connects chaos theory and how a very small difference in the initial conditions can lead to dramatic outcomes; it really gets to the idea of how decisions affect our lives."

"In life, you have to make a decision, you hope that it’s right and moral, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t impact other relationships," said Chiappetta. "This season is all about the fallout and consequences of the choices the characters make."

The results of biochemist Walter Bishop’s (played by John Noble) earlier life-and-death decision will continue to have a ripple effect throughout the season.

"Both Walter and Walternet (Walter in the other universe) started out the same, but they each made a different decision; now Walter is driven by guilt and Walternet by anger," said Whitman. "Viewers will constantly be surprised by the by the ways the characters in the two universes are the same and different."

Seeing the same character in two different worlds also gives viewers a chance to get to know the characters of "Fringe" in whole new light.

"You’ll see more of other character’s stories such as Astrid Farnsworth (played by Jasika Nicole), Nina Sharp (played by Blair Brown) and Agent Phillip Broyles (played by Lance Reddick)," said Whitman. "You’ll find out how they developed in the other universe. In this universe, Agent Broyles is divorced but in the other universe, he is more of a family man. Viewers will find out how the characters were exposed to different circumstances and how it changes them."

Some of the characters are more similar between the two worlds than others.

"Astrid’s character is the one that is the most different from this universe to the other, both personally and emotionally," said Whitman. "In the other universe, she is a savant with Asperger’s syndrome that allows her to do some amazing things."

"This season the characters will do things that viewers might not expect or agree with," said Chiappetta. "Agent Olivia Dunham (played by Anna Torv) will do something and the viewers will go ‘Oh My God, I don’t like the fact that she did that!’ but they’ll understand why she did this, there are reasons."

The writers have enjoyed the unique challenges of writing for two universes.

"Luckily, there is no shortage of new science that continues to inspire us," said Chiappetta. "There are even old ideas that we’d like to crack open and explore this season.”

"Thinking in another dimension is definitely a challenge, but the goal is to further these relationships and to take the show to a new level, it’s really two shows in one," said Whitman. "It's intriguing and scary. In each decision, you can become a different person -- what do you do and what does that choice do to you?"

On September 23, the third season of "Fringe" begins with Olivia Dunham, Walter Bishop and Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) digging a little deeper to untangle two universes with some subtle but consequential differences, while taking audiences on a thrilling and sometimes chilling ride.

Exclusive First Look: Fringe, Reloaded
Sep 15, 2010 10:25 PM ET
by Natalie Abrams

If you think Fringe's alternate universe is confusing, don't be misled: It'll actually be easier to follow along as the Fox series reboots once again in Season 3.

"The beginning of the third season, it's like a pilot again," Anna Torv says. Why? Because our Olivia is being implanted with Faux-livia's memories while rehashing and struggling to hold onto her own.

For diehard fans, though, the overload of old information won't distract from all the new.

"All the details are there if you're looking for them, but if you're not, I don't think it pushes anybody away," Torv adds.

FRINGE Star Blair Brown Offers up a Teases About Season 3

      Email Post       9/16/2010 01:07:00 PM

There is a very good reason we relish every opportunity to talk with actress Blair Brown. Unlike Nina Sharp, the notoriously ambiguous character she plays on the increasingly addictive Fox show FRINGE, Brown loves to talk. A LOT. As you’ll soon see in this one-on-one we conducted on our recent set visit in which the actress was only to happy to drop some fairly big bombshells about the upcoming third season on FRINGE. See for yourself after the jump.

Looking back for a moment on last May’s finale, are we correct in recalling that we have yet to meet Nina’s alternate universe counterpart?
Blair Brown: And we still haven’t! At this point she is conspicuously absent from the other side and I assume there is a reason for that. The first and third episodes of the season are about the other side while the second and fourth are about this side because there is an awful lot of business we have to deal with now that William [Bell] gone.

Is there a possibility that our Nina doesn’t have an alternate? Could she be dead?
I’m not sure and I don’t know. You see, I’m not a person who asks the writers those kinds of questions.

Really? As an actor one would think that you’d be interest, at the very least for job security!
[Laughs] We’ve signed contracts, I’m not worried. I just like being surprised by things. For instance, this scene that Josh [Jackson] and I just played where he’s saying, “So, how do you feel about Walter taking over Massive Dynamic?” Nina responds with, “My personal feelings are not the important part. But I think he’s really smart.” Now ask yourself, is that the truth? I think the thing that’s fun about playing Nina is that whatever is on the page you play the opposite because we know in particular that Peter and Nina are fairly duplicitous characters on this side of the world.

How does Walter inheriting Massive Dynamic from William Bell impact Nina, who up until this point has pretty much run the show while Bell was trapped in the alternate universe?
That’s what I think is so interesting. Does Nina want Walter to succeed or fail? And what’s Peter’s participation? Is he sort of saying that this is a crazy set up or is he actually interested because he could now possibly have access to the keys to the kingdom. We know Peter has a darker side to him, so what will that be like?

Has it been fun getting to shoot more scenes between Nina and Peter this season?
Yeah I like that, because going back to the first season where we see them in a riding ring and I say to him, “We used to spend a lot of time here.”

There certainly has been a lot hinted about when it comes to the relationship between the two characters.
Presumably I’m somebody’s mother, but whose, and on what side!

Another relationship fans have been anxious to learn more about is Nina’s relationship with Olivia. One imagines that she would be the first to suspect that there is a little something “off” with “Olivia” upon her “return” from the alternate universe!
We haven’t had a scene together yet, which is interesting, because it’s always been about Nina looking out for Olivia, protecting her, inviting her to work at Massive Dymamic. Yet [four episodes into shooting] this season, we have yet to have a scene together.

Have you had any scenes with Broyles where perhaps you’ve had the opportunity to re-address that kiss way back from last season’s premiere?
No and it’s very funny because someone asked us at [San Diego] Comic Con something about that and I just made a joke that Jasika’s character [Astrid] is Broyles and Nina’s love child! And the respone was, “Is she, Is she?”

One question you definitely do have an answer to is your reaction to discovering the truth about what happened to your arm in last May’s finale.
I always knew that was bogus! I kept bringing it up to the writers, I wasn’t buying the “cancer” excuse. But again, we have yet to explore that history with Walter and Nina, there was a night they both remember!

What kind of reaction do you get from fan encounters on the street?
Because the show is so complicated, the best part is that when people come up to you on the street it’s less about “I love the show,” and more about “Can you tell me why…” Which is why I really have to keep up. Even the episodes I’m not in I always read them. People often ask, “Can you follow the show?” Well, yeah because we have the benefit of each-other. I just heard somebody on the crew asking somebody else about the new script, “What is this thing about the ‘red pill’?” We have each-other and I guess fans have blogs. It’s nice to have something to puzzle out because most things are so simplistic.

Do you sit down with the writers at the beginning of each season and talk about the direction of your character?
Some people do, but I don’t because I actually just trust these guys and I know they are trying to make the most interesting thing. Nina is a kind of grace not that weaves through and tends to come in and complicate the plot. So that’s very fun to be that person who comes in and complicates these things.

When you finally do get to encounter your alternate version of your character [assuming one exists!], what do you hope she’s like?
What I would hope is that she’s neither good nor bad because then we’d know what she was on this side. But given that on this side she’s very controlling, ordered, in control and not really into letting people know what she thinks, I’d love on the other side if she was out of control and just like this kind of mad thing. Or just someone who’s out there in some way. It would be too sad to make it just good and evil.

The ambiguously of her character is more fun to play.
In particular in Nina’s case, it’s more useful plot wise, for her not to be one thing or the other.

The Fringe Season 3 Premiere Review

      Email Post       9/14/2010 11:14:00 PM

The subtitle to this review should be: “Why Fringe Will Save Television,” but I’ll spare you my fan-boy inspired hyperbole – even though it just may be true. I just finished watching Fringe’s third season premiere episode, “Olivia” [Premiering on FOX Thursday, September 23rd at 9/8c], and I feel like I just saw the impossible happen – Fringe’s creative team already sat a land speed record for taking Fringe from good to mind-meltingly awesome last season , this year Fringe sets the bar for appointment TV. Let’s break this down.

What’s it All About

I promised no spoilers, and I intend to stick to it. That said, it’s probably pretty apparent what the episode is about: it’s about Olivia. “Which Olivia?”, you ask – and by asking you pull into focus what makes Fringe so unique. “Which Olivia?”, is exactly the question you should be asking. We know one is in the ‘Alternate Universe’, while the one originating from the alternate universe is in ‘our’ universe. The concept feels a little gelatinous in the brain, doesn’t it?

The best thing about “Olivia” is that in the gap between the Season 2 finale, and the Season 3 premiere, you’ve probably had a pretty good idea of what the plot is going to entail – and you are wrong. If you thought the focus of season three was going to be ‘how does Olivia get back,’ get ready for a surprise.

Is It Still Fringe-y?

The only thing certain with Fringe is the uncertainty, and in that sense the Fringe Season 3 premiere is true to what you’ve come to expect. Watching Fringe can sometimes feel a bit like having your brain thrown on a taffy puller, and “Olivia” is no exception. Nothing notable has changed in the sense of the style of the show, although the premiere is certainly a fine example of the Fringe brand in its perfect state.

Your DVR No Longer Has Value

If you are like me, Season 2 of Fringe was gotta-watch-it-live TV. The overarching plotlines, particularly the suspenseful thread of Peter finding out his over-there-ness, demanded your attention. The characters were never more detailed, and the dramatic issues at hand were absolutely riveting. Fringe really proved itself as a dramatic vehicle, and not just another gimmicky sci-fi flash in the pan. The morality plays involving Walter and William’s drug experiments on children (did the ends justify the means?), and Walter’s kidnapping of Peter from the other dimension – which, as it turns out, not only serviced a grief stricken father’s sense of loss, but also saved Peter’s life – are on par with anything else on television in terms of dramatic metal. This is solid stuff, and yes I am aware of Breaking Bad and Mad Men. At its core, Fringe is a show about ethics – and the sage writers room has mastered the groove of feathering the edges of the concept of ethics, and playing it for all the ambiguity it can contain. Fringe has become a moral safari that leaves you dizzy trying to wonder who is right and who is wrong.

The season three premiere of Fringe escalates this sort of play considerably. It is more of an adrenaline packed episode than a philosophical brain-teaser, but the writing very elegantly takes us down from a fight/flight story-line involving Olivia that you probably expect, to a tantalizing wink towards something you most likely would never predict. Give your DVR a break on Thursdays, Fringe’s third season is something you’ll want to watch live.

Character, Character, and More Character(s)

Anybody who ever said that Torv’s Olivia was scantly drawn will be beside themselves with this episode. As you can guess, the episode focuses almost entirely on Olivia who was last seen confined in a dark cell in an alternate dimension, the plaything of The Secretary, A.K.A Walternate. What you get in “Olivia” is some development for the titular character that comes via the very unique lens of Fringe’s alternate universe playroom. Here we get to examine Olivia’s character by contrasting how her own past clashes with the ‘road-not-taken’ world of Over There. The episode is busting with well-crafted bits of subtext that flirt with notions of identity, all amplified by the fact that we are observing Olivia as two different people with two different histories. To say those histories collide is an understatement, the way in which they collide is a bit of plotting that further galvanizes the ‘Fringe’ brand of story-telling.

The episode is light on the other core characters, instead introducing us to a new character that is bound to become an instant fan favorite, Andre Royo’s Henry the cabbie. All I can say is I hope FOX had the foresight to book Royo for a substantial arc because the former The Wire star really cooks in the premiere. Royo’s Henry is essential to Olivia’s plight in the alternate universe and the scenes between him and Anna Torv are a master class in craft as they bring the sheer absurdity of her situation into totally genuine human dimensions. Don’t worry, you do see the other characters – and there are numerous surprises there as well.

Bottom Line

Want to see a perfect blend of action, brain rending science fiction, and compelling character drama? Tune in to Fringe’s Season 3 Premiere and you’ll get it all and more. Fringe returns totally in shape and ready to take all comers.

Fringe is extraordinary television. It would be very fair – realistic in fact – to say that Fringe weathered a critical and ratings storm to get to where it is now, and the show is paying off anyone who held faith by continuing on a track of mystery, moral ambiguity, and sheer thrills that is distinctive in the current crop of TV shows. With LOST in the rear-view mirror, Fringe is poised to take its own unique place in the annals of television of the fantastic. A++

Alt, who goes there?!

The alternate universe is in for a major dose of Dunham when the real Olivia gets the upper hand on a very messed-up resident of the other side as she battles her way home in Fringe's season premiere. Considering the producers have told TV Guide Magazine that the other side has super-healing nanotechnology (and that actor Seth Gable would be back on the show), could Agent Dunham be facing down the previously incinerated Lincoln Lee? And more importantly, will she be able to get back to our universe before her doppelganger gets her paws on Peter?
