Peter & Olivia Don't Remember Meeting As Children:Will We Ever Find Out Why Not?

I have a Fringe question that’s been bothering me for quite a bit. Will we ever find out why Olivia and Peter don’t remember meeting each other? — Gloria

Not this season, says executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman. And possibly not ever. Pinker says, “I think that one of the things that we have been keeping in mind, and the viewer should keep in mind: both Joel and I – and I’m sure you’re the same way — had really close friends when we were 8 that we can hardly picture in our mind right now. And this was just a chance meeting. Olivia [also] didn’t remember meeting Walter, who played a much more significant role in her life. She didn’t remember meeting him throughout the first whole season until she was reminded.”

Adds Wyman, “There’s also something to be said that when traumatic experiences, you know, you could bury that stuff. So you bury some of the good stuff along with the bad stuff because some of those good things are triggers for the bad things.” What’s interesting, says Pinkner, is that earlier in the series, neither fans nor the creative team really noticed that even after years as Walter’s test subject, Olivia should have remembered Walter. “And yet, because the Peter and Oliva moment was so romantic and so full of hope, you remember, “Oh, why doesn’t she remember that one?” Which says something lovely about us all as people; we want to remember the good things and leave the bad things.”
Yeah. These guys seriously speak this deep on the phone. I died of heartbreak multiple times. Sigh. Thank God this show was renewed.

  1. That explanation doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Your mind has to be really messed up not to remember stuff from when you were 8. Who are you kidding?

  2. I hope you are joking, because I don't think most people remember EVERYTHING that happened to them when they were 8, especially not some random kid they met once.

Even though the grown up Olivia has a photographic memory, she may not have had it back then. Plus, she went through a lot of traumatic stuff when she was a kid, I think we are supposed to accept that she has blocked out a lot of her childhood.

  3. I definitely don't remember stuff from when I was 8. I only have a handful of memories from ages 0 to 10! Also, another thing that could have added to the effect was that after Olivia stopped being afraid and stopped feeling the effects of cortexiphan, she also could have blocked the memories of Jacksonville.

...or maybe she was visited by the same man who tried to activate Nick Lane, Susan Pratt, and James Heath's powers. Except maybe her memories were wiped. We might never know.

(Also, still bugging me: all the way back in season 1, what did John Scott know when he asked Olivia to question why she of all people was sent to the warehouse to investigate that first Fringe case?)

  4. I think this moment is way more important to us, as observers (not the kind who wear hats) looking back from our own viewpoint, than it would be to a 8 year old at the time. The important thing to Olivia would be making the choice to tell Walter and the confusion that that led to for her (having to have that conversation with two different Walters) would overshadowed the nice boy she meet.

  5. I think the overall point was that this should have been explained better. We forgot each other is kinda lame.

  6. If the writers don't want Peter and Olivia to be together, why do they keep creating situations telling the viewers the contrary, is Fringe only about that? how long will they keep going with this soapy storyline, I'm really tired of this, it's really getting so so boring now, back to Fringe please ! With all happened during season 3, Olivia deserves to be happy with or without Peter, she can find another love interest, instead of holking on with this guy who can't tell who he is sleeping with, lol.

I'm really tired of people complaining about "soapy" story lines. Fringe is a drama. The characters are not robots, they are humans and they have emotions. Just because there are story lines that involve relationships, does not make it a soap opera. There is plenty of sci-fi to go around.

  9. Olivia not remembering her childhood days was questioned by some originally. I think most wrote it off as trauma though. Now we see just how much of a role walter played in her life and it becomes harder to swallow that she can't remember Walter. Add to that, her forgetting Walter had a son and not remembering the other kids in the trial and it all becomes real suspicious. Peter has pointed out that he remembers other things from his youth. While I do not remember much from that age myself, there are always those that stand out who had a larger impact on my life including both adults and those I became close friends with.
