Jasika Nicole: I was sh**ty at science, but play a great scientist on TV

It's been a great week for "Fringe" fans. First we learned that the show's risky move to Friday paid off in spades with season best ratings. Then it was revealed that with DVR numbers factored in, the show performed even better (season four ahoy!). Yesterday, PopWrap broke the news that the February 25 episode would be a flashback companion piece for season two's beyond brilliant "Peter" and now I'm serving up the second half of my spoiler filled interview with the adorable Jasika Nicole!

No subject was off limits as I sat down with the giggliest member of TV's best sci-fi thriller, so check out our chat which covers the Olivia/Peter/Faux-livia love triangle, the mysterious Doomsday Machine, those time-tripping Observers, Walter's Vagenda and more.

PopWrap: First of all, congrats on the great ratings -- how/when did you find out?
Jasika Nicole: We found out on Saturday – my email inbox was stuffed with emails from Kevin Reilly [President of Fox], Jeff Pinkner ["Fringe" EP] and everyone else. I think that Fox was pretty surprised. I know they had good intentions but I don’t think they thought it was going to work out. It was a really risky move to make and it totally paid off.

PW: This season has been absolutely amazing -- do you just read scripts with a slackjawed expression?
Jasika: Absolutely! And reading the script is the only time I’m able to fully be an audience member. They don't tell us anything, so I can go into it with completely clear eyes and devour it. I just love these relationships and these characters so much.

PW: And now you've got twice as many with the alternate universe.
Jasika: I know! It’s crazy! And a lot of them are the same people, just in different worlds ... and you're going to start seeing alternate people in our universe for the first time. We’ve seen it the other way, but it’s going to start happening the other way around pretty soon. It’s limitless. I’m assuming if there are two worlds, there are an unlimited number of worlds.

PW: Then last week's episode showed us The Observer's can bring people back from the past as well -- will we see more of that?
Jasika: I think so – in one of my EPK interviews, those questions were all being raised – what would it mean for someone to come back from the past who had passed away. It makes me think that might be coming up in future shows, but I don't know for sure.

PW: We're about to head back to the alternate universe again ("Immortality" on Feb 11), will we see Alt-Astrid?
Jasika: Yes you will! And she's still doing her totally smart but socially disconnected thing but there’s a really quick scene in the situation room where you see a flash of romantic interest in another person. It’s quick but could be built upon. Or just left for the audiences to know that Alt-Astrid isn’t totally emotionless.

PW: What about "Reciprocity," tonight's episode -- what can you tell me about that?
Jasika: Peter starts to come into his own in this episode. Except for Broyles, he's really the only person that doesn’t have a doppelganger and I think -- in terms of the story the writers have created -- there’s some balance about having both characters. They’re complimentary. But because Peter doesn’t have that it’s almost like he’s soaking up too much of the bad – it’s pretty creepy. You get to see Peter being kind of dangerous in a way that we’ve only hinted at before. You’ll see him veer into scary territory in regards to the Doomsday machine. You wonder if he’s taking control of the machine or is the machine taking control of him.

PW: Filming-wise, you are a few episodes ahead -- by that point has the real use of the Doomsday Machine become clear?
Jasika: It's not. We know it has something to do with the war between universes, but I don't know if that means survival or destruction. But you’ll find out in a few weeks that something else is going to determine which universe survives. And that part doesn’t have much to do with the machine at all – it has to do with Olivia & Peter.

PW: Oh. Is this the rumored Faux-livia pregnancy?
Jasika: That could potentially be what I’m talking about – we all know Peter had sex with Faux-livia. What that means in their universe compared to our universe will be revealed in an upcoming episode that we haven’t shot yet. I don’t’ know for sure, but it raises the question for sure.

PW: Personally, I am eating up this love triangle Peter has with the same-ish woman -- as a fan of your own show, what's your take?
Jasika: You know the scene where Olivia realizes Faux-livia has been living in her apartment and has that breakdown? The way Anna [Torv] cried her face off, I almost lost it. That was the first time my heart really, really went out to Olivia and I fully realized how she might not be able to recoup from that. She’s already so guarded and so stand-offish, this may have pushed her over the line and I don’t know if she can come back.

PW: So you're Team Olivia?
Jasika: Well ... what if Peter loves Faux-livia? What if your soulmate lives in another universe? Talk about a long distance relationship! There’s no phone to the alternate universe. It’s a wonder that anyone can survive that! It's funny, the number one thing fans ask me is if Olivia and Peter are going to consummate their relationship.

PW: Isn't it interesting how this job makes you hypothesize on fictional people's sex lives?
Jasika: [laughs] I know! It’s pretty hilarious. I’ve been asked more than once if I was a scientist before I was an actress. I take it as a compliment, and I think it’s funny. But then I have to disappoint people by telling them how sh**ty I was at science. [laughs] But, I play a great one on TV, so that should count for something!

PW: I have to ask -- last week we got another great Walter-warping of Astrid's name. What's your favorite?
Jasika: [laughs] Assturd still holds first place. It doesn’t get better than that, but Ostrich is a pretty great one too, but Assturd is so out of this world -- it’s almost up there with Vagenda!

PW: That particular line had me laughing for hours.
Jasika: Then you can imagine how difficult it was to keep a straight face while filming that scene. It’s pretty wonderful. I’m glad you appreciate it as much as we do.

Fringe:Is Alt-Olivia Pregnant?

Fringe: Is Alt-Olivia Pregnant?
Jan 27, 2011 10:45 PM ET
by Natalie Abrams

Last week's midseason premiere of Fringe left fans with one very important question: Is alternate-Olivia (Anna Torv) pregnant with Peter's baby?

After chasing the Observer through the streets, Peter (Joshua Jackson) came face to face with the man who once saved his life, but now was seemingly trying to kill him to test Walter (John Noble). "It must be very difficult," the Observer said. "Being a father."

Wait. What? Peter is a father? While the interpretation of "father" could apply to Peter or Walter, since he was the patriarch being tested, we posed the possibility of Alt-Olivia being pregnant to Joshua Jackson.

"You know as well as I do that I can't tell you that," Jackson says coyly. "It's Fringe. We don't drop like lines that [for no reason]."

This season, Peter thought he was falling in love with this universe's Olivia, with whom he's been working over the last few years. But it was Alt-Olivia (or Bolivia, as the cast and crew call her), who was using him to infiltrate the Fringe Division. Once the truth came to light, Peter's world shattered as he realized he was falling for the wrong woman.

"I like to refer to Peter now as the dumbest smart man on the planet," Jackson says. "Olivia is getting a lot of sympathy, but Peter, with the best of intentions, [screwed]-up huge. He didn't know. It's not like he stepped out on his girlfriend ... To his credit, Peter has been a mensch, at least, about admitting what went on."

"They wrote, and hopefully we'll perform in a nicely grown-up way, the fallout of the 'Peter slept with Bolivia thing' with Olivia," Jackson says. "These are two grown-up people who are trying to deal with a circumstance that nobody on our planet has literally ever dealt with. I was pretty disappointed with how stupid Peter was earlier in the year, so I like that he's being a man about this."

Peter will now grapple with whether he's truly in love with Olivia, or if his heart lies with Bolivia. "There's no easy answer to that," Jackson says. "Only on Fringe do you have problems like this."
Fringe airs Friday at 9/8c on Fox.

'Fringe' video preview: Doomsday looms! -- EXCLUSIVE
by Jeff Jensen
Categories: Fringe, Sci-Fi, Television

For those expecting doom and gloom from Fringe with its move to Friday, the exclusive news that we have for you today is that you’re going to get it. Using an old time machine that we found in Walter’s dusty lab of fringe science wonders, we peeked into the months ahead and saw that death, destruction, and despair awaits those committed to the Fringe ride. I’m sorry. Stock up on tissues, because I worry that the season finale could be a gut-wrenching affair for all of us … and that the cliffhanger ending will have us wanting the immediate arrival of Season 4.
That’s right, I am dreaming of a fourth season. And yes, I was shamefully exploiting your Friday deathslot fears for the sake of a clever, gimmicky intro. Me = evil. Hopefully you heard the encouraging news that the debut of “Fringe Fridays” was surprisingly robust. Last week’s bow drew 4.9 million total viewers. And the DVR numbers were strong, too, especially in the 18-49 category that advertisers like most.

No, my bleak oracular prognostication had everything to do with the story that Fringe will be telling us in the weeks to come. My “time machine”? The video below, produced by the folks at Fox, that has exec producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman and the cast of Fringe — including Joshua Jackson and John Noble — previewing the remainder of the season. My imagination was pretty activated by this clip; I’ve got theories galore. But I think we should all be on the same page before I go gonzo with speculation. So I’ll save my nutty thoughts for next week’s “On The Fringe” column, and leave you to the sneak peek.

'Fringe' is going back to the past
January 27, 2011 ι Jarett Wieselman

"Peter," the season two episode that brilliantly chronicled how Walter Bishop accidentally abducted the alternate universe's Peter, was such a fan favorite that producers are headed back to 1985 in an upcoming episode of "Fringe."

Slated to air February 25, the installment will serve as a companion piece to "Peter," according to star Jasika Nicole. "It’s going to pick up right where 'Peter' left off and it’s better than the first one," she told PopWrap.

But unlike the season two edition, "this flashback is going to take place in the alternate universe as well as this universe. That’s why it’s so good, you’ll see the repercussions stealing Peter has for Walter and Walternate," she adds.

A huge part of the fallout will involve Elizabeth Bishop. "As we've seen, Walternate is still with his wife and there’s a reason for that. You see all these consequences that happened as a result of that [abduction] and what that means for his relationship with Elizabeth. It's a really heartbreaking story."

"Fringe" airs Fridays at 9pm on Fox -- and check back tomorrow for the rest of PopWrap's interview with Jasika Nicole!

Fringe Exclusive: Andre Royo Poised to Return!
By: Michael Ausiello

Buckle up, Fringe fans: Olivia’s “over there” cabbie is getting back behind the wheel!
Sources confirm to me exclusively that The Wire‘s sensational Andre Royo will reprise his role as original-flavor Olivia’s alt-universe sidekick Henry Arliss Higgins for one episode later this season.

Henry was last seen in November when he helped Olivia return home.

In case you missed the other good Fringe news over the weekend, the show got off to a strong start in its new Friday timeslot. Not only did it win the night among adults 18-49, but it was up 12 percent from its last original Thursday airing.

Please join me in a chorus of, Phew!

How will Fringe wreck your nerves next? The producers tell all!

      Email Post       1/22/2011 07:05:00 PM

How will Fringe wreck your nerves next? The producers tell all!
Last year, Fringe raised the bar for insane mindgames and unforgettable characterization. So what's next? Will Walter's heart (and brain) get broken again? Will Olivia go through more hell? And what about Walternate? The producers tell us what to expect.

We were lucky enough to get to email some questions to Fringe producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman, and here's what they told us, ahead of tonight's new episode. Also, we were on a conference call yesterday with Fringe star John Noble and tonight's guest-star Christopher Lloyd, and Noble told us a few tidbits about Walter's future. Minor spoilers below...

First, here's our exclusive interview with Pinkner and Wyman:

Obviously, we've all gotten really attached to the cast of characters "over there," including Lincoln, Charlie and the autistic version of Astrid. Now that none of our three main characters is there, are we going to see less of that world? Or will we still find ways to look in on them?

We will absolutely still be visiting the alternate world — we love those characters too. One of our goals from the first half of this season was to "earn" the ability to tell stories set exclusively Over There, even after Olivia returned home... And after all, Bolivia's story (and Walternate's) is now inextricably tied to the story going on Over Here.

Dean Norris at Fox told Entertainment Weekly that Fox plans to promote the show to teenage viewers who might be at home on Friday nights, emphasizing the show's horror elements and making it look like "forbidden fruit." Are you going to try and increase the show's horror element as part of this strategy?

Horror has always been one of the arrows in our quiver - and it will continue to be. That said, we won't be changing our story telling to lean more in one direction or the other. Though, some scares on a Friday night do seem to be the perfect way to kick off a weekend.

Are we going to start seeing signs that "our" universe is unstable in the same way that "over there" is unstable?

Absolutely. Back in 1985 Nina warned Walter that his crossing over to the other universe to save Peter would damage both universes. We have seen the accelerated damage that has been going on Over There (Vortexes, Mutant Insects, etc) and now we will start to see that the physical constraints of our side may be beginning to fray as well.

Will Olivia ever get badass superpowers? We've seen hints she can do things with her mind — are we going to see more of that? When will we see this happen?

Superpowers, not so much. Though an ability to "see" and cross over to another universe is an ability that would be pretty damn cool to have, if you ask us.

During the episodes set "over there," we got a lot of hints that Walternate might be more responsible for the devastation to his universe than he's letting on. It seems like right now, "our" Walter is living with almost unimaginable guilt for having wrecked an entire universe. Without giving any huge spoilers, do you think it's possible to spread the blame for the destruction "over there" without letting Walter off the hook, and thus taking away the guilt that makes him so compelling?
Nope. It's pretty much all Walter's fault! Apparently playing God has it's consequences. Walternate has been doing his best to contain the damage to his world - and has had to make some hard choices, namely when/if to amber innocent civilians in order to "plug the dike". But it would be unfair to say he is responsible for exacerbating the damage.

I've read elsewhere that Olivia's evil stepdad will be showing up. Is this for just one episode, or is he going to have an ongoing arc?

We will meet him in an episode later this season - he will largely be used to highlight an emotional trajectory for Olivia. But, in the vein of spoilers, the story is set 25 yrs ago.

Where did the character of Walter come from in the first place? What do you think are the ingredients of a really great mad scientist? Whose idea was it to give him a touch of Timothy Leary along with Frankenstein?

J.J. [Abrams], Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] created the character in the pilot. But the character has certainly grown (as was intended) since then. Every great Mad Scientist needs a healthy dose of curiosity, boundless imagination and elevated sense of his own abilities, along with some disregard for the consequences of whatever he may be doing. Walter and Bell were also products of the late 60s, when psychedelics and other drugs were viewed as a very viable tool for mind expansion — so his LSD use, etc was a natural choice.

Do you write quirky moments for John Noble on purpose? Has there ever been a script where you looked at it and thought it needed more ridiculous Walter moments, or do those just naturally find their way into scripts?

Walter is super fun to write for. The "quirky" moments just come naturally.

Similarly, now that Anna Torv has shown what an amazing range she has, do you find yourselves looking for ways to use that, or to work in more intense moments for Olivia? Were you surprised by what Anna Torv was able to bring to her performance as both Olivias this past year?

The fact is, there is nothing we won't throw at Anna. She's simply amazing. We've known from the beginning what a world class actor she is. Ironically, as the show set out, she was playing a character who was unsettled — looking to find her sea legs as she entered this Fringe world that she knew nothing about — working with Walter and Peter, etc — and she got an unfair knock for being unsettled as an actor. But having the opportunity to show off her range, and genius, as Bolivia has really reflected how great her work is as Olivia, and how specific her take on the character is. And, again, small spoiler alert — we're going to be asking her to stretch that range in a fairly insane way in a few upcoming episodes.

For a while there, Akiva Goldsman seemed to be stepping in as a kind of godfather to the show. Is he still involved with it at this point? Will he be doing any more writing or directing?

Akiva remains very much a part of the braintrust of Fringe. He will continue to write, and direct.
And finally, I have to ask — how set in stone is the endgame for this series? If it winds up ending early, are we going to get the ending you'd originally planned? Is there a chance the show could end on a cliffhanger?

We know where the show ends. And we know several of the season-long chapters that will occur along the way. Much of our storytelling has been seeded from very early on. The only real question is how many of these chapters we will be able to explore.

Meanwhile, we were on a call yesterday with John Noble and Christopher Lloyd. And Noble told us that the secret to playing characters from an alternate universe is to remember that they don't think they're from an alternate universe — they think theirs is the real universe, and ours is the alternate. Noble also promised we'd be learning more soon about the Observers trying to repair the damage they did to both universes with their meddling, back in 1985.

And Noble added:

Walter came from a very big fog in the first season and slowly he's put his life back together... We started this season with a great big rift between [Peter and Walter] and [he's starting to mend it]. Walter's become conscious but the major problems he faces, [which] he thinks he's incapable of solving. He keeps saying, "I'm not smart enough to do this any more," and Nina keeps encouraging him... and he finally comes to face up to his limitations, but also his strength, which is more than enough to deal with the problems. It's a wonderful journey for Walter this season and he gets to go through all the stages.

And we asked Noble if we would get to see Walter running Massive Dynamic, and Noble laughed and said, "Can you imagine a world with Walter running Massive Dynamic? I think it's just as well we haven't seen much of it." Luckily, Nina is mostly doing the day-to-day running. And he said he just shot a scene showing what sort of CEO Walter would make.

And we asked if we would be seeing Walternate starting to fall apart in the wake of killing his universe's version of Broyles, and Noble responded:

You won't see him falling apart. [Instead], you will learn more of what made Walternate what he is, and you will see some humanization of the man behind that steel exterior. He has to make some difficult decisions. We've done some terrific things that don't soften him, but help to understand that he is man not a machine I hope that there is a resolution between Walter and Walternate, because I don't see either of them as bad men.

Fringe - Major Storyline Rumor

No idea if this is true, I guess we'll find out soon... or not.

I'm a Vancouver Fringe fan, and as often happens in cases like this, I know people who work on the show. I have a MAJOR spoiler for you all that I've been sitting on for about a month now out of respect for the people who shared it with me. Now that I'm getting signs that it's about to start leaking for real, I'm going to let it out myself.

Alt-Livia is pregnant and we'll be finding out about it coming up pretty soon. The episode in which we learn this was in post-production about a month ago so it should be airing in the near future.

What do you guys think about this spoiler and the potential implications it has for the storyline and Peter/Olivia?

Fringe Stars Preview What's Ahead in Season 3

Today's News: Our TakeFringe Stars Preview What's Ahead in Season 3
Jan 12, 2011 11:20 AM ET
by Carita Rizzo
Fringe moving to Friday may seem earth shattering to some of its fans, but at FOX's TCA party on January 11, Lance Reddick and Jasika Nicole previewed future plot lines that will literally put the Fringe division on shaky ground.

"The degradation of the physical universe that is happening in the alternate universe is going to start happening on the primary side," says Reddick. Adds Nicole, "It's no longer about needing to communicate with them and say, 'Look, we don't want to be at war, we just want peace.' It doesn't really matter because the worlds are starting to come apart at the seams in a fundamental way. The trajectory of the show is figuring out how to stop that from happening, so that our universe doesn't become like theirs, because theirs is practically destroyed."

The earth is not the only thing rattled on the latter half of Season 3. "The biggest tease that I can offer you is that this love affair between Peter and Olivia, which involved another Olivia, has not ended," says Nicole. "You're going to get your first hint about what it means in the first episode back, at the very end. And if you blink you'll miss it. It's something at the very, very end if the episode — a little trigger — and it [points to] something that happens in the future. It's going to link the universes in a way that they have never been linked before."

And in February, after the great success of the previous flashback episode, Fringe is delving into Alterna-Peter's childhood in episode 15. "It's actually a flashback in both universes," reveals Nicole. "It delves even deeper into the inner workings of why [Walter] took his son but more importantly, what happens to a child when they're taken from another universe? Does he know? He knows that there's something different about his parents."

Nicole says she's not worried about the time shift, from Thursday nights to Fridays. "I don't know if it's because I'm super optimistic but I don't see how this could be bad for us," she tells us. "On Friday night we're contending with less, so I feel like if anything, we might even gain some people. I think that if we can maintain ourselves, and maybe gain some more [viewers], that would be really good. And I can't imagine that not happening."

Exclusive: Fringe Welcomes Home Olivia's Wicked Stepfather!
By: Michael Ausiello

As if you needed another reason to follow Fringe to its new Friday time slot, sources confirm to me exclusively that later this season, producers are planning to introduce a new Big Bad — perhaps the largest, worst Big Bad of them all: Olivia’s abusive (and never-before-seen) stepfather.

As you know, a 9-year-old Olivia — tired of watching her stepdad mercilessly beat her mother — shot and nearly killed the evil-doer. He eventually disappeared to parts unknown but has continued to send her cryptic messages every year on her birthday. What brings him back into the fold? And better yet, who should play the MIA monster? Let’s leave the first Q to the producers and the second one to Mr. Armchair Casting Director (that’s me!).
Michael Emerson: Not only is he probably one of the few actors who takes “Oh my God, you’re so creepy!” as a compliment, but this gig would keep him busy until things really get hopping on the pilot he’s hatching with his former Lost boss, Fringe producer J.J. Abrams.

Terry O’Quinn: If Abrams thinks Emerson is the wrong shade of black hat to menace his Fringe heroine, perhaps his other muse, Lost’s Locke, could fit the bill. He, too, should have a little free time before that pilot he’s doing with Abrams and Emerson kicks into high gear.

Robert Knepper: I haven’t enjoyed a piping-hot cup of English Breakfast since Prison Break put T-Bag’s portrayer on the map. Thank goodness his character wasn’t named Scones. I really love scones.

Jon Voight: His stints as 24’s controversial’s controversial Season 7 heavy and the de facto Jock Ewing of Fox’s short-lived Lone Star reminded us that this acting heavyweight is way more than just Angelina’s dad.

Willem Dafoe: I’m sure he’s a very nice fellow and all, but the erstwhile Green Goblin’s face alone frightens me. If he has lines, too — which, um, in most roles, he tends to — forget it.

Gary Oldman: Besides being a 100-percent brillopants thesp, the onetime Dracula brings just the right amount of out-there to his work to fit right in on Fringe.

John Malkovich: What’s better than being John Malkovich? John Malkovich being villainous. Sure, he’s more than gifted enough to play Mr. Nice Guy, but it’s so much more fun when he doesn’t. (For a probably less expensive option: Think Big Love casualty Zeljko Ivanek. He and Malkovich are practically evil twins.)

Who do you think should play Olivia’s Stepdaddy Dearest?

Let's make a list of who we, the viewers, would like to see cast as Olivia's "Big Bad."
My number one pick would be Michael Keaton. He broke the mold, in my opinion, for the most messed-up Batman. I think he would make a perfect evil step-father to our favorite female FBI agent.
